Blog Entry #3: Mashups and Copyright Laws!

The Mashup i watched was from the hit show Glee.

1. What is this mashup trying to communicate? Is it technical experiment, social or political commentary, a comedic parody, or an abstract work of media art?

I think the video is trying to tell people to never let other people bring them down and not let anyone get in their way of doing what they do no matter what it is. The video in a way is inspirational because the music in this mashup has very powerful lyrics. Since this video was made for the very popular show Glee  I think this mashup of multiple songs is a peice of media artwork because when the viewers that watch the show, probably think of the mashup as just another song and don't look into the depth of what the mashup really means.

2. Did its creator follow or break copyright laws in its production?

I think the creators followed the copryright laws in its production because Glee is a very popular show and is viewed by the million this would mean that someone would have looked at the mashup and see that it enforced the laws otherwise the mashup wouldn't have been aired. If the copyright laws were not followed the producer would have changed it to follow the rules or they would have not have aired it at all.

3. Do you think that mashup like this requires copyright permission? Why or why not.

I think this mashup requires copyright permission because this mashup is making money for the show using other people's work. So the producer would have had to make sure that the artisits were properly credited for their work. If this mashup had just been made to be viewed by people for non-profit, I do not think you would need copy right permission.

  1. Great choice of mashup Ryan! Even though Glee is a hit t.v. show, it still needs copyright permission just like you stated. However, I think that in this video, the creators didn't follow the copyright rules because they didn't reference or give credit to the music group. But, good response!
